I am scared of public speaking and still I am standing in front of people (not speaking). This is so courageous of me! It is proof that I have inner strength.

Although I am scared of public speaking, this is not the end for me because public speaking is an acquired skill. I could always learn it. Almost every person, who is comfortable in front of a large audience, is so because he developed the skill. Nobody was born with public skills and I am just another normal human being for this.

On the plus side, this could be an opportunity for me to join the Toastmaster's club in my company/office. Since speaking in front of groups of people is something that's required for my job, it is very likely that my supervisor will allow me to join the Toastmaster's club. This can be great because:

  • I could give practice speeches in front of club members (safe environment with nothing to lose)
  • I could develop various leadership skills in the club
  • I could get better at impromptu speaking
  • It would be a great way for me to meet other people who're equally bad at public speaking and are trying to improve (aka, people who share the same fear)
  • It would be a great way for me to meet other people who have similar responsibilities (aka, people who share the same work/domain) and get tips from them

If not the corporate TMs club, I could join a public Toastmaster's club.

This is an opportunity for me to take part in local community volunteering events. When we volunteer for local Non-profit organizations, it gives a lot of opportunities for people interaction that won't affect my job, i.e., a safe environment.

On the plus side, I could connect with other people who have similar designations like mine, and try to find out how they deal with the fear of public speaking. Did they also feel this way when they started their jobs?
